When Should I Bring My Child to the Dentist?

/

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and other national health care organizations recommend you bring your child into a pediatric dentist for an appointment by their first birthday. This way, your dentist can track your child's tooth growth from its beginning stages into adulthood.

Early Dental Care Milestones

Pediatric dentists recommend you start flossing your child's teeth as soon as one tooth touches another.
Pediatric dentists recommend you start flossing your child's teeth as soon as one tooth touches another.

Birth to Six Months

Caring for your child's oral health begins before any tooth growth occurs. Pediatric dentists recommend parents start practicing good oral habits by cleaning your infant's gums after feeding. Gently massage the gum tissues with a moistened washcloth. As your child starts teething, you may notice their gums appear more red or swollen. This is normal and can be calmed by cold temperatures.

6-12 Months

Your child will likely develop their first tooth within this timespan. Make sure to bring your child into our office for their first dental appointment when this growth occurs. You can continue to massage the gums with a cool washcloth and start implementing good oral hygiene habits by brushing the emerging teeth with a soft-bristled child's toothbrush. Though it surprises many parents, pediatric dentists don't recommend toothpaste at this stage.

12-18 Months

If your child has yet to see a dentist for the first time, now is a great time to do so. Continue to gently brush your child's teeth with fluoridated water and regularly check for any small spots of discoloration on your child's teeth that may indicate tooth decay.

18 Months to 5 Years

Between two and three years of age, your child's baby teeth should have grown into their mouth. You can start to brush your child's teeth with a small amount of fluoridated toothpaste at the age of two. Make sure to teach your child to spit out the toothpaste and not swallow it. Our dentist can also help you find a solution to curb thumb-sucking or pacifier use if your child continues this habit past age three.

Is Your Child Afraid of the Dentist?

We Offer Sedation Dentistry

The dentist can be a nerve-wrecking experience for children. Sharp tools, the claustrophobia of working within the limited space of the mouth, and the foreign environment can cause anxiety for many youngsters.

To help calm fears we offer nitrous oxide, which is safe for children, at our Rockaway, NJ, practice. Nitrous oxide helps relax the body and mind during your child's dental visit. The flow of nitrous oxide is delivered through a mask placed over the child's nose and mouth. Your child is awake throughout the process, but will feel more relaxed. Once the flow of nitrous oxide stops and the mask is removed, the effects of sedation wear off within 15 minutes.

Dr Lubart and her staff gave me the best dental experience. At the jump the receptionist handled a weird insurance issue for me quickly and easily. Dr Lubart was wonderfully communicative, informative, calm, and patient. I was aware of all possible outcomes during my procedure and she took photos to show me with mini updates.
